Kiwanis Daybreak • Meeting Minutes
June 7, 2017
The meeting began promptly at 7:30 with 21 members present (wow, way to go!). Our speaker today is Jen Strauch, vice president of community impact for the United Way. Hired tis past January, she is immersed in the collective impact movement, which is about bringing together community businesses and government for the purpose of impacting social change. One of the goals is to enhance food access and coordinate resources. Jen stated that 54% of Monroe County’s children receive free/reduced lunches (13067 kids, to be exact). United Way is striving to support working families with child care. 35% of local children are being raised in single-parent households. Jen reminded us that all monies raised remain here in Monroe County. At the conclusion of her talk, she took questions. President Andy presented her with a plaque of appreciation.

Barbara K. moved the approval of last week’s minutes. The noon club has issued us an invitation to attend their chicken barbeque on July 8. Andy asked the members to decide if we want to nominate someone for the Hero in Service award. Mike proceeded to auction off the wine bottle and two glasses decorated by Burnley Workshop clients. The winning bid was $12, from Dick Waibel. Kate said that she will be getting into high gear for raffle ticket sales soon. Winner will receive a free week’s lodging at an RCI property.
John is still taking orders for Kiwanis Daybreak shirts. Dues are currently due--$65. Dick W. announced that the traveling wall of Vietnam veterans’ names will be in Plainfield, NJ from June 14-19. Do not forget our social meeting on the evening of June 21 at Crescent Lodge. There will be no morning meeting that Wednesday.
The meeting concluded at 8:05.

Board meeting
Board members attending were Andy, Carole G., John, Kate, Sara, Steve K, plus various club members. We decided to purchase an ad in the PA convention booklet for District 7. (We purchased a $100 ad last year.)
We had a lengthy discussion on whether or not we would like to sponsor the Stroudfest run, due to the demise of the Pocono Area Running Club. Sara stated that she is willing to spearhead this effort if we decide in the affirmative. The Board’s biggest concern is the outlay of funds required, so she will obtain figures on last year’s event and we will then come to a decision.
June’s budget figures are as follows:
As of 6/7/2017, Administration budget: $2871.14; Community budget: $5094.17. Estimated June expenses are $250 for golf shirts: $500 to the library. Estimated balances as of the end of the month: Admin.:$3450; Community: $5450.

The meeting concluded at 8:40.
Respectfully submitted, Jackie Flynn, secretary
